Graphic description of the chart

The World in the tarot
  • The World card shows in the center a dancing figure, a nude woman, rejoicing in the completion of the day and celebrating not only the accomplishment, but also the new beginnings it promises.
  • The woman has one leg crossed over the other, as does the Hanging man.
  • She is, in a sense, his opposite: As the Hanged man sees infinitely inward, the woman in the World card seems to see infinitely outward.
  • In each of her hands she holds a rod or staff, representing evolution and balance. She is surrounded by a thick green crown, symbol of success, victory, and achievement, tied with the red ribbons of eternity.
  • The red ribbons form the symbol of infinity, representing the infinite rewards of positive efforts in the betterment of ourselves and those around us.
  • Within the laurel wreath is a star of light indicating the attainment of enlightenment or cosmic consciousness.
  • The figures in each of the four corners of the World card are the same images that appear on the Wheel of Fortune.
  • Interestingly, the World card is closely associated with the Wheel of Fortune, reflecting the cyclical evolution of time and human experience.
  • The four figures (a lion, a bull, a cherub and an eagle) represent the four fixed signs of the zodiac (Leo, Taurus, Aquarius and Scorpio).
  • These are also symbols of the four elements, four suits of the Tarot, four cardinal points, four seasons and the four corners of the universe.
  • All these figures are in view and make up the power of the dancing woman.
