The tarot reading is a ritual.

In this chapter of the tarot course, we will look at tarot spreads, symbols and the unconscious. Why are certain symbols used and made in tarot readings?

The Tarot has a rich and large collection of symbolism, where we know that it is not just a bunch of cards with random images; each card, each image and small illustration that appears, has a meaning and a purpose. It is there for a reason, and yet, we do not know many of the symbologies that appear.
We well know that symbols have a power, whether magical, symbolic or at least unconscious, and that is why they have been used throughout history.

Tarot is a ritual

Now, the way in which the cards are arranged during a Tarot reading is not arbitrary and much less casual. Each arrangement, or as we commonly say, each spread, has a purpose, an order, a specific meaning and a reason, and the position of a card within the spread completely affects its interpretation.

In the arrangement of the cards, we form symbols, and these are so deep, powerful and meaningful that it is usually unconscious, because most of the time we do not even ask ourselves why such a spread is done in such and such a way, or why such a symbol is formed. In other words, we rarely ask ourselves why we throw the cards the way we throw them.
It is worth noting that the arrangement of the cards during a spread is a ritual and not a mere casual or random act. And although in everyday life, and in the simplicity of the act it may seem ordinary, we must know that it is a ritual. A magical, divinatory or symbolic ritual, but a ritual nonetheless.

And each position or symbol used in a spread has a specific meaning and a history, and evokes and channels different energies or effects, that is why it is important to know what this implies.
Thus, in each ritual, each symbol has its own energy, meaning, and the inappropriate use or ignorance of these can lead to misinterpretations or even negative or unknown effects. For example, if a tarot reading is used, but not fully understood what the symbol or arrangement means, it can end up channeling certain energies.

Likewise, those who know about the subject, also understand that a symbolic representation or other types of rituals, whether psycho-magical, magical, symbolic or healing, are done because they are ordered and worked with symbology. This explains why tarot works so well as a divinatory, therapeutic, psychological or self-knowledge method.

Finally, the intention with which the reading is approached is crucial. If the reading is done with a negative intention, it can certainly influence the interpretation of the cards and the energy that is channeled during the reading. On the other hand, if the reading is done with a helpful and understanding intention, it can lead to more helpful and positive results. In other words, the intention always influences the rituals.

In conclusion, we must reflect on what symbols we use and do in our divination or therapeutic ritual, with what energy we connect, as well as what decks we use and what symbols they have, as well as what elements are involved in such readings.
