In this chapter of the tarot course we will see the emotional tarot. Exercises to know, learn and differentiate the emotional states of the 78 Tarot cards.
How to establish and create an emotional connection with the cards. How to get to know and bond with a new deck. How to differentiate the emotional states of the Tarot cards.
Exercises to learn and connect with the different emotional states of the Tarot.
To begin this exercise, you will need a large space where you can be calm and work comfortably. For example, a large table, or if you prefer to do it on the floor, I recommend a rug.
Once located, take the full deck of cards and several pieces of paper.
Step 1. Emotions.
Next, on each piece of paper, write an emotion.
For this exercise we will start with six emotional axes in which you will group the cards.
Each group, for simplicity, encompasses a subset of similar or related emotions, which are as follows
- Group One, Joy, includes pleasure, happiness, laughter.
- Group Two, Fear, includes terror, panic, blockage.
- Group Three, Sadness, includes sorrow, longing, nostalgia.
- Group Four, Anger, includes anger, arrogance, violence.
- Group Five, Surprise, includes impression, shock, incomprehension.
- Group Six, Calm, includes sleep, relaxation.
Of course, later on if you prefer, or if you consider it necessary, you can then choose other feelings or emotions, or group them differently.
For example, you can include emotions or feelings such as contempt, indifference, melancholy, depression or peace, among other emotions that are important to you, or that you wish to practice.
Step 2.
Next, once you have written down the emotions, place the pieces of paper along the work space.
Now, quickly and without much thought, distribute the cards in sets around each piece of paper.
Let it flow. Possibly you will have some doubts with some cards, because you will not know where to place them. In these cases, be guided by your intuition.
Step 3.
Once the cards have been dealt and grouped, reflect on the final result.
Have you had many doubts, would you change any card’s place, why should that card be in that group and not another, has the exercise been easy, are there any cards that you are not sure or that you have not been able to group?
We must keep in mind that many times, it will be easier to identify one emotion than another.
Step 4, optional
If you feel like it, you can ask the opinion of another person. Ask them what they think of how the cards are grouped, is there anything they would change?
Remember that the cards are self-descriptive, so it is not necessary for that person to know the Tarot.
Simply see if they agree with your choices and comment on the results. This will help you to see emotions from another person’s perspective.
Finally, practice this exercise several times to become more aware of the cards and improve your emotional bond.
I recommend you to add more emotions, to discover each card and its emotion in more detail and to be able to differentiate them clearly.
Finally, with each practice I recommend you to take a picture and then compare the result of the exercise. Observe, have you moved any card?
